Exodus 3:1

Reflecting on Exodus 3:1 – Moses at God’s Mountain

Context

Exodus 3:1 (WEB) tells us, "Now Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the back of the wilderness, and came to God's mountain, to Horeb." This moment marks a pivotal turning point in Moses’ life and in the story of God’s deliverance for Israel. Moses, once a prince of Egypt, is now a humble shepherd in the wilderness. The mountain Horeb, also known as Sinai, is where God will reveal Himself and call Moses to lead His people out of bondage.

This verse captures the quiet before the divine encounter. Moses’ daily routine of tending sheep brings him to a place of solitude and reflection, away from the distractions of the world. It is here—on this mountain—that God’s presence is about to break through in a powerful and life-altering way.

Practice

Like Moses, we often find God’s voice in the ordinary rhythms of our lives. Our own "wilderness" seasons—times when life feels isolated, challenging, or uncertain—can become sacred spaces where God meets us. The story invites us to embrace these moments instead of rushing past them.

We can practice attentiveness and openness, recognizing that God’s call often comes unexpectedly when we are simply faithful in small tasks. Moses didn’t plan to meet God that day; he was doing what was entrusted to him. Yet God used this faithful service as the backdrop for a divine encounter.

Our spiritual journey requires patience and trust—trust that God is present even when we feel alone or insignificant. We can cultivate an inner posture that listens for God’s voice and is ready to respond when He calls us to new purpose.

Prayer

Lord, help me to be present in the quiet moments, like Moses tending his flock. Teach me to recognize Your voice in the ordinary and to trust Your timing. When You call, give me courage to step forward in faith. May I be attentive to Your presence on my own life’s mountains.

Grant me the humility to serve faithfully in everyday tasks, knowing that You can use them to prepare me for greater things. Help me to embrace the wilderness seasons as times of growth and revelation. Amen.
